If you like gangster movies, you don’t want to miss this one. Not only does it look like a good gangster shoot-out flick, but it also has Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone getting down and dirty. Add to this the fact that the film has an A-list cast, and this one is a no-brainer.
The setting is Los Angeles in the 1940s and 1950s, where Chicago mafia boss Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) has decided to settle in and make a name for himself. The LAPD aren’t having any of that, so John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) puts together an off the books hit squad to wage war against the gangsters. This puts Sgt. Wooters (Ryan Gosling) in contact with Grace Faraday (Emma Stone), who just so happens to be Cohen’s main squeeze. There’s a connection right off the bat. In fact, the interaction between Gosling and Stone is almost palpable. The film is rated R for strong violence and language. No word on any nudity, but we can only hope, right? Gangster Squad opens January 11th, 2013.
Official Synopsis: Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and–if he has his way–every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart. “The Gangster Squad” is a colorful retelling of events surrounding the LAPD’s efforts to take back their nascent city from one of the most dangerous mafia bosses of all time.
